Science fiction’s domain is based on the possible.
Both science fiction authors were beyond their time.
No. Bias must be accounted for in real-life analysis of historicaldocuments too. That's one of the reasons that real-life science isconsidered more reliable than real-life history. Historical methodsare often our only way of determining what happened long ago (we haveno way of knowing how many soldiers died on D-Day through scientificmeans, for example), but if an historical story cannot be reconciledwith science, there is no question that we classify it as inaccurate(for example, the historical story of the Biblical Great Flood isimpossible for many reasons, so we conclude that it did literally happen as written. Instead, we look at the fact thatsmaller, more localized floods are possible (and there are even somecandidates for specific mechanisms through which a regional floodmight have occurred at the right time and place), and try toreconcile the historical record with our understanding of science.
Wells: Inventing the Science Fiction Genre
In science fiction novels and stories, we get to experience and explore these futures through the eyes of the characters in the books. We get to put ourselves in their place and live through them. For instance, I’ve recently written a number of stories set in Bristol in the future. But in each of them, the future has been slightly different. In one, the city gets eaten by a plague of microscopic robots. In another, it’s rendered uninhabitable by an explosion at the Berkeley nuclear power station. In these stories, I’m not trying to explain the mechanics of how these events happen. Instead, I’m taking the reader on a journey, to give them an experience they’ve never had before, such as riding a motorbike through deserted city streets, or standing in a park looking out at all the familiar buildings in ruins.
