Homecoming is Friday! STUCO helped organize spirit week. We have fun themes to help support school/district spirit. Our daily themes are: Pink & Bling, Camo & Diva, Opposite day—shirts inside out or backwards/pant leg rolled up, etc., Rock Star and Purple & Gold. This should be an exciting celebration!

For these reasons, Hamid Massali is my Kindest Kansas Citian.

Last year PHHS was one of ten schools in the Kansas City Region awarded a silver level award for having the highest gain in seatbelt use among students. Our goal this year is to repeat as a Battle of the Belt Winner. Recently, these signs have been posted on Rooster Way to remind our students of the importance of wearing their seatbelts. Stay safe on the roads Roosters/Chicks!

Students and staff are gearing up our first Celebration Assembly on Friday, October 26th at 2:30. During the assembly Trackmaker Awards, as well as building awards, will be distributed. We will hand out Honor Roll certificates and ribbons to students who earned all A’s first quarter, Principal’s Award certificates to all those who earned A-B’s, and then Perfect Attendance Awards to students that did not miss a day of school. Perfect attendance students will enjoy a popcorn and movie party with the Principal that day as well. During the assembly we will also recognize those students who worked hard but maybe did not earn all A’s and B’s. This will be a Recognition Award that will be based on perseverance chosen by the classroom teacher. Finally High Five Character Awards will be given to those students who earned the most High Fives First Quarter. Parents and community members are welcome to attend this exciting event!

The Packs finished fourth, 5 1/2 games behind Chicago, with an 81-72 record, half a game better than Newark, which finished 80-72. Kansas City would not see as high a finish by a major league team for another 56 years.

Grover Gilmore was a career minor-league outfielder whose only shot at the bigs came with Kansas City. His 108 strikeouts in 1914 was the second-highest season total at the time. His performance in Kansas City should have merited at least one more shot at the bigs, but his career was cut short by war and by death due by typhoid.

Our week will conclude with a visit from the Pleasant Hill Fire Department. They are coming to the Elementary School to educate our students on the importance of fire safety. We are looking forward to their visit! As you can see it is going to be an exciting week!

Teachers at the Primary School have been engaging in lots of professional learning, both at the district level in ELA, Math, and iPad meetings, and at the building level with Missouri Learning Standards, use of informational text, and writing instruction and collaborative scoring. Megan Smith and Crystal Parson from the Intermediate School immersed themselves for a day in kindergarten and first grade classrooms, respectively, as they prepare to transition to our building for the next school year. The PS staff is excited to welcome them, and has provided lots of materials to get them started.
Kindergarten screenings are completed, and Andrea Abbott has been conferencing with her families about their children's transition into kindergarten next year. Denise Robinson, Nancy Ullah, and Tricia Beaman served on an interview committee with me this week, so we can have recommendations for kindergarten teachers at the April board meeting. Kindergarten Round-Up, when students will meet their teachers for next year, is May 19.
Recent and upcoming student events include National Library Week starting April 7, field trips for kdg, 2nd. grade, and EC classes, much-acclaimed 1st. grade musical performance of "Bugz" on April 1, kdg. performance with music and movement on April 29, recognition for our secretaries on April 23, and Hat Day on April 24 (with proceeds going to Camp Quality of Greater Kansas City for children with cancer).

His parents still live in the Kansas City area, as do two younger brothers — one a lawyer and another a pediatric cardiologist.
