Last year PHHS was one of ten schools in the Kansas City Region awarded a silver level award for having the highest gain in seatbelt use among students. Our goal this year is to repeat as a Battle of the Belt Winner. Recently, these signs have been posted on Rooster Way to remind our students of the importance of wearing their seatbelts. Stay safe on the roads Roosters/Chicks!

Students and staff are gearing up our first Celebration Assembly on Friday, October 26th at 2:30. During the assembly Trackmaker Awards, as well as building awards, will be distributed. We will hand out Honor Roll certificates and ribbons to students who earned all A’s first quarter, Principal’s Award certificates to all those who earned A-B’s, and then Perfect Attendance Awards to students that did not miss a day of school. Perfect attendance students will enjoy a popcorn and movie party with the Principal that day as well. During the assembly we will also recognize those students who worked hard but maybe did not earn all A’s and B’s. This will be a Recognition Award that will be based on perseverance chosen by the classroom teacher. Finally High Five Character Awards will be given to those students who earned the most High Fives First Quarter. Parents and community members are welcome to attend this exciting event!

The Packs finished fourth, 5 1/2 games behind Chicago, with an 81-72 record, half a game better than Newark, which finished 80-72. Kansas City would not see as high a finish by a major league team for another 56 years.

Grover Gilmore was a career minor-league outfielder whose only shot at the bigs came with Kansas City. His 108 strikeouts in 1914 was the second-highest season total at the time. His performance in Kansas City should have merited at least one more shot at the bigs, but his career was cut short by war and by death due by typhoid.
